Madre de Dios, Perú.

Located in the southeastern Peruvian Amazon is a large area of illegal and irregular gold mining, responsible for the deforestation of more than 100,000 hectares. Over the past decade, small-scale miners have transformed the landscape from tree-covered marshlands to a desert pockmarked with polluted ponds, leaking mercury into the local food web. Peru is the first gold producer in Latin America, In Madre Dios, where 46,000 artisanal miners are extracting minerals, only 10% is legal.
