THE ARTWORK
Pale earth, dark ground.
A landscape threaded with red.
In Griffin & Ewington, broad light-toned excavations occupy the centre of a darker, richly marked surface. Red passages spread around them, while thin lines cross the composition and connect its separate areas. The rounded contours of the worked ground contrast with the angular routes that surround it. Color gives these relationships added intensity, transforming a complex mining terrain into an image of distinct masses, fine connections and shifting boundaries.
